Magi Kern

Hello, my name is
Magi Kern

I’m a Polish/Canadian/American citizen living with my husband and two kids in the outskirts of Philadelphia, PA. I have a partial education in architecture and communications, and a working background in graphic design - specifically print design. I dabble in various forms of fiber and textile art, first learning crochet as well as basic embroidery skills in 5th grade - this is also the time when I would go visit with a local elder in the Polish community to learn traditional lace crochet. In addition to fiber arts, I also enjoy painting using watercolors and gouache. These days I balance homeschooling my children, working on my art, and holding down the fort, things that I write about on my blog here.

Why the name
Star Magnolias?

In 2013, we planted a star magnolia tree (the one in the image on the right) in our yard for our first-born, my daughter. My reasons for learning how to needle felt, and to later create this website, came into being as a result of my becoming a mother. It’s hard to know how our lives would have been different under different circumstances, but I’m not sure if I would have taken up this new path while focused on a career. I began to view this tree as a good metaphor for this new path in my life, and over time, how it represents the growth and change I experience as a result.
